Programme:
The first film made by Guinean filmmakers after liberation from Portuguese colonialism, this documentary follows the transfer of Amílcar Cabral's remains from Conakry, where he was assassinated in 1973, to Bissau. Interweaving images of a state funeral with Guinean music and archival material, the work — which marks 50 years — pays tribute to Cabral's role in affirming the former Portuguese colonies as independent nations, an idea revisited in Mortu Nega, a fiction film directed solo by Flora Gomes ten years later. Both films are presented in versions restored by The Film Foundation.
