Programme:
David Bowie and Andy Warhol crossed paths only once, in a meeting that turned out to be seemingly disastrous. Fascinated by the Factory since his youth, Bowie paid tribute to Warhol in the song “Andy Warhol,” an ambiguous ode to the artist. In 1971, during a stay in New York, Bowie visited the Factory accompanied by Tony Defries and Angie Bowie, but the chemistry was lacking—Warhol saw him as just another fan and even rejected the song. It was an encounter that might have gone differently had it happened years later, when the Ziggy Stardust phenomenon crossed the Atlantic and hit the U.S. Interestingly, 25 years later, Bowie would go on to portray Warhol in Julian Schnabel’s film Basquiat.
